Larry Reesor and Me

100 Days to 50: Day 94 – The Most Influential Men in My Life

7. Larry Reesor, Mentor and Friend

I met Larry Reesor in 1989, just a few months after I became the Pastor of Mt. Zion Church in Jonesboro, GA. He was in his mid 40’s when we met, a few years younger than I am right now. I was age 24. Representing a mission organization, he walked into my office and offered me a free trip to Costa Rica to learn how to lead my church to “be on mission”. It was something I was already dreaming about in my leadership, and I had gone to Liberia to preach among the unreached; but I simply didn’t know how get my church more involved. Larry became a mentor and friend who taught me how to develop church ministry around an “Acts 1:8 Strategy”, to identify our “Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and ends of the earth”, and develop a mission strategy for each one. My ministry leadership has functioned under that strategy now for these 25 years. My ministry in general, and Midway Church in particular, has a clearer focus and worldwide impact because of Larry’s influence.

In addition to ministry value, Larry has been a true friend, confidant, encourager, and champion for my success. Even in his busy worldwide speaking schedule, he continues to take initiative to stay in touch on a regular basis. Larry Reesor is unequaled in his passion for his God-given purpose and calling. At almost 70 years of age his energy level and commitment to live out his mission is inspiring. When asked about what’s going on in his life and ministry, his common phrase is, “It’s amazing what God is doing! It’s like drinking water from a fire hydrant!” I’ve been hearing that for 25 years! He’s well aware of the blessing of God on his life. I hope I can walk the next 25 years as well as Larry has walked it. His example has shown me how to do it extremely well!

Larry has inspired me to strategize to reach the world with the gospel.

Larry has inspired me to be passionate about God’s purpose for my life.

Larry has inspired me to walk alongside other leaders who hunger to excel.

Larry has inspired me to invest in others over long periods of time.

Larry has inspired me to be a better husband, father, leader, and friend.

I’m thankful!
